Vikings fall twice to Carleton

DUNDAS, MN – The Bethany Lutheran Vikings softball team dropped two games to Carleton College on Saturday evening. The Vikings fell behind quickly in game one, losing18-2 in five innings. BLC bounced back in game two and controlled most of the game, but the Knights won in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back home, including a walk-off, to win the game 7-6.

In game one, things looked good early on. Kaylee Mork scored the first run of the game, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead, after a single up the middle from Haylee Sobrero brought her home. Carleton claimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning and then added five in the second and seven more in the third. Another run for the Vikings in the fourth and four more for the Knights put the final score at 18-2 in favor of Carleton.

The Vikings managed six hits total, but couldn't match the scoring power of the Knights. Haylee Sobrero went 2-3 with a double and one RBI and and Morgan Mashlan was 2-2 with one RBI. Majeski started for the Vikings and was given the loss. She allowed eight hits and seven runs with four strikeouts in two innings of work. Eden Ambrose pitched the final two innings and gave up 10 hits and 11 runs.

The Vikings showed resilience in game two by bouncing back quickly. After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Vikings rallied for four runs in the 2nd to take the lead. Eden Ambrose scored the first run of the game for the Vikings and was followed by Taylor Kottke, Morgan Mashlan, and Shelby Bloemendaal. Ambrose went 2-4 in the game with one run. Bloemendaal was 2-2 with 2 runs and 1 RBIs.

The Knights tied the game in the fifth with three runs, but the Vikings retook the lead in the top of the sixth with two of their own. Things looked good for the Vikings after six innings, but a scoreless seventh left the door open for the Knights and they took advantage. With one runner one base, Carleton homered to left-center to tie the game. The very next batter also sent one over the fence to end the game with a walk-off home run. The Vikings had lost 7-6.

Shelby Bloemendaal started for the Vikings and in just over four innings of work she allowed 10 hits and four runs. Bria Majeski came in for relief and was given the loss, allowing five hits and three runs with three strikeouts.
