MANKATO, MN – The Vikings took the field this afternoon for a pair of non-conference games against Martin Luther College. The Vikings entered the games today with a record of 2-9 while the Knights came in at 2-6. The Vikings boosted their record to 4-9 after taking both game from the Knights. Game one was 3-2 and game two was 13-4.
The Vikings put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Grant Becher, the leadoff hitter for BLC, reached with a single and then maneuvered his way around the bases, scoring run number one on an error by MLC. The error that brought Becher home put Nick Caldeen on base who would eventually score after error number two for the Knights. Tommy Gannon and the Viking defense held the Knights to one run through four innings of play, but the Knights tied the game in the fifth at 2-2. Gannon pitched five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, and seven hits with one strikeout. With the game tied 2-2, Caldeen delivered a single in the bottom of the seventh which brought Becher home for the winning run. Becher was 3-3 with two runs, Ross Beumer was 2-4, and Brady Schuster was 2-3. Logan Nissen pitched the final two innings for the Vikings and earned the win giving up zero runs and one hit with three strikeouts.
Game two wasn't much of a contest as the Vikings raced out to a 10-0 lead after three innings. The Vikings added three more runs in the sixth and won comfortably 13-4. They recorded 13 hits led by Cody Ulfers who was 3-3 with three RBIs. Ross Beumer was 2-4 with a triple and two RBIs and Hunter Pearce had a nice game going 2-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Colton Blain got the win for the Vikings in four innings of work. He allowed no runs and three hits with two strikeouts.
