Mankato, MN. – The Vikings split wins with Simpson College. The first game was a 7-6 close loss for the Vikings, and the second game was a 15-11 comeback victory for the Vikings. The win puts the Vikings record at 6-11.
The first game started out with Simpson scoring a run against the Vikings with two outs in the top of the first. The Vikings left a runner on second, but ended the first inning scoreless. The Vikings would only face three batters in the top of the second inning, and then they would mount their offense. In the bottom of the second inning, the Vikings would score four runs: an RBI by
Grant Becher which saw
Nick Caldeen score, an RBI by
Ross Beumer which saw
Cody Ulfers score, and a deep single by Schuster which batted in
Grant Becher and Gannon. Simpson would be able to rally, scoring in the fourth, seventh, and eighth innings to outscore the Vikings 7-6.
The second game would fare much better for the Vikings, though it wouldn't start out like that. Simpson would score 6 straight runs to start out the first inning. The Vikings would give up 5 more runs in the second and third innings, and going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Vikings would be down 11-0. Then, it would be their turn to rally.
Nick Caldeen would steal home on a wild pitch in the fourth. They would shutout Simpson in the top of the fifth inning. Then,
Ben Boran hit a three run homerun,
Nick Caldeen would steal home again, and Pearce would bat in
Cody Ulfers. The Vikings would be able to hold Simpson scoreless in the next three innings, and going into the bottom of the eighth the Vikings were down 11-10. Then,
Nick Caldeen,
Cody Ulfers,
Ben Boran,
Jake LaBerge, and
Jared Gesell would all score to give the Vikings 15 unanswered runs, and a 15-11 victory after nine innings.
