DULUTH, MN – The Bethany Lutheran College baseball team got off to a fast start in the 2019 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament. The defending UMAC tournament champions took down #3 University of Northwestern in their opening game by a score of 13-6.
The Vikings put runs on the board quickly, scoring four in the bottom of the first inning which included a two-run blast from Brady Schuster. The Eagles mounted a comeback and tied the game in the top half of the fourth inning, but the Vikings responded in the bottom half of the innings with four more runs to take an 8-4 lead. BLC would not look back as they took down UNW by a final score of 13-6.
The Vikings tallied a total of 14 hits in the ballgame, led by Ben Boran and Cody Ulfers with three hits apiece. Boran continues to put up serious numbers and added three runs and one RBI to his count. Nick Caldeen went 2-4 in the game with a triple and one RBI. Adam Fjerstad went six innings and recorded four strikeouts to pick up the win. Fjerstad now has six wins in league play which is more than any other pitcher.
Up Next: The Vikings will play again tomorrow at 4 PM and await the winner of #1 St. Scholastica vs. #4 UW-Superior.
