MANKATO, Minn.— The Bethany Lutheran softball team (2-4 overall) split against Buena Vista (1-1) Saturday night at the MSU Dome.
BV won the opener 8-2 and the Vikings won the finale 8-5.
The first game was scoreless until the third inning when Buena Vista plated two and later extended its lead in the fifth with three runs to make it 5-0.
BLC got on the board in the bottom of the frame as sophomore Zoe Kinakin (Victoria, British Columbia) drove in senior Haylee Sobrero (Paradise, Calif.) from first on her double to right centerfield.
BV tallied two in the sixth and one in the seventh for the 8-1 lead.
Junior Kaylee Mork (Brandon, SD) scored the final run for Bethany in the seventh as she capitalized on an error.
Junior Tara George (Cottonwood, Calif.) was 2-3 and Sobrero was 2-4.
A different storyline played out in the finale as BV tallied a run in the first two innings.
BLC used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead, and included a two-run double from Kinakin, who then traded places with the next batter, George. The Vikings put another four on the board in the sixth, thanks in part to a three-run home run that hit the wall of the dome over the left field fence by junior Alyssa Kostka (Redding, Calif.).
Buena Vista compiled a late rally with three runs in the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second base, the next batter grounded out to the pitcher to seal the win for Bethany.
Kinakin and George both went 2-3 with two RBIs, as Kinakin's two doubles marked a career-high. Junior Sarah Presler (Brandon, SD) was 2-2 and Kostka earned the save.
BLC takes to the road Wednesday to face Hamline in a twinbill at 6 p.m. at the Dundas Dome in Northfield, Minn.
