Bethany Lutheran Falls to Northwestern

TUCSON, Ariz.— The Bethany Lutheran baseball team (0-4 overall) dropped both games of the twinbill with Northwestern College of Iowa (10-8) Monday. The Red Raiders won the opener 5-4 in eight innings, and 9-7 in the finale.

In the first game of the day, Northwestern plated two in the third for the first lead. The Vikings evened the score with one in the fifth and sixth innings. Junior Kaylan Legred (Blue Earth, Minn.) drove in pinch runner junior Tommy Gannon (Janesville, Minn.) on his single to right in the fifth and sophomore Connor Side (Denver, Colo.) scored in the sixth on a fielder's choice.

The game was tied through the seventh to push it into extra innings. In the eighth, the Red Raiders recorded two runs on an RBI triple to right and a fielding error to regain the lead at 5-2.

In the bottom of the frame, sophomore Hunter Pearce (Berthoud, Colo.) scored on freshman Reed Brown's (St. Michael, Minn.) triple to right and he later capitalized on a fielding error to make it 5-4. Unfortunately, the next batter hit into a force out to halt a further rally.

In the final game of the day, Northwestern was the first team on the scoreboard with a run in the first. BLC answered with seven in the top of the second to take the 7-1 lead. The Red Raiders plated two in the second, one in the fifth and five in the sixth to regain the 9-7 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Vikings had runners on first and second with two outs. The baserunners successfully executed the double steal, but were left stranded as the next batter struck out.

Sophomore Zach Diaz (Tampa, Fla.) went 2-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.

Bethany is off from competition tomorrow and return to the field Wednesday for a doubleheader against Marian at 4 p.m. (MST).
