Bethany Lutheran Splits Opening Day in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz.— The Bethany Lutheran softball team (5-7 overall) split its contests on the first day of the Spring Break trip. The Vikings beat Baldwin Wallace 9-3, and fell 8-0 in five innings to No. 1 and defending National Champions, Texas Lutheran.

Baldwin Wallace took the early 1-0 lead in the first and plated two more in the third to make it 3-0.

The Vikings sliced the margin to one in the sixth as junior Alyssa Kostka (Redding, Calif.) hit a two-run single through the right side to make it 3-2.

BLC plated seven in the seventh which included a two-run single down the right field line by junior Kaylee Mork (Brandon, SD). The Yellow Jackets were retired in order in the bottom of the frame to seal the win.

Mork and sophomore Anna Hoffman (Watertown, SD) both were 2-4 at the plate.

In the final game of the day, TLU tallied two in the second, four in the third and won on a two-run double in the fifth for the shortened game victory.

Sophomore Zoe Kinakin (Victoria, British Columbia) went 2-2.

Bethany returns to the field tomorrow when it plays No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan and Sul Ross State.
