MANKATO, Minn.— Bethany Lutheran (2-6 overall) split with Buena Vista (5-1) Sunday to complete its competition at its own Bethany Invitational. The Vikings won the opener 6-4, which halted a four-game winning streak by the Beavers. BV won the finale 6-0.
In the opener, the Beavers took the early 1-0 lead on an RBI single to left.
The Vikings answered in a big way in the bottom of the frame, as they scored six runs on four hits and capitalized on two fielding errors to take the 6-1 lead.
The Beavers scored three runs in the third on as many hits to slice the margin to two. BV looked to rally in the fifth and seventh innings, but runners were stranded on third to quell any additional runs.
Six BLC hitters had one hit, which included a double from junior Kassidy Cunningham (Portage La Prairie, Manitoba).
In the finale, Buena Vista took the early 1-0 lead in the second and added four in the fourth, thanks in part to a two-run triple. The Beavers added another run in the fifth to push the lead to 6-0.
The Vikings hit a leadoff double in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but unfortunately were left stranded and unable to end the shutout.
Freshman Ana Christofferson (Mankato, Minn.) went 2-2 with two doubles, and classmate Haley Stockman (Mankato, Minn.) also went 2-3 with a double.
The Vikings return to the field Saturday when they face UW-River Falls in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. at the Rochester Dome. No spectators will be allowed.
