ROCHESTER, Minn.— Bethany Lutheran (3-7 overall) split with UW-River Falls (2-2) Saturday at the Rochester Dome. The Vikings won the opener 8-0 in five innings to make head coach Dan Nessler the all-time winningest coach in program history.
The Falcons claimed the nightcap, 7-2.
In the first game, Bethany scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning highlighted by a two-run single from freshman Brynja Mielke (Mankato, Minn.).
The Vikings added to their total in the second inning on an RBI groundout by junior Zoe Kinakin (Victoria, British Columbia) to score sophomore Katelyn Halbach (Osage, Iowa) to increase their lead to 4-0.
With two outs in the third, Bethany scored four runs on five hits. Sophomore Liz Milam (Le Sueur, Minn.) and Kinakin had RBI doubles and freshman Jenna Wahl (Holmen, Wis.) and Halbach both had RBI singles in the frame.
Halbach was 2-2, scored three runs and had an RBI. Kinakin and Mielke each added two RBIs.
Senior Alyssa Kosta (Redding, Calif.) threw a complete game and recorded four strikeouts.
In the finale, BLC got on the board in the top of the first inning. Kinakin hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Halbach for the early 1-0 lead.
UW-River Falls took the lead with a two run second and scored four in the home half of the fifth to make it 6-1.
The Vikings tallied a run in the top of the sixth on a Kinakin RBI groundout to score senior Eden Ambrose (Hugo, Minn.).
The Falcons scored the game's final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Freshman Ana Christofferson (Mankato, Minn.) went 2-3. Freshman Haley Stockman (Mankato, Minn.) had a double, Mielke had a single and an RBI, and Kinakin knocked in a run as well.
BLC is off from competition until its own Vikings Classic on Wednesday, March 17.
