Softball Splits Day One of Vikings Classic

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Bethany Lutheran softball team (5-9 overall) split the first two games of its own Vikings Classic Wednesday. BLC won 2-1 against Finlandia, and fell 6-5 to Concordia College (Minn.) in the second game of the day.

In the opener, freshman Haley Stockman (Mankato, Minn.) drove in sophomore Katelyn Halbach (Osage, Iowa) in the first inning on her single to second base to give the Vikings the early 1-0 lead.

The Lions would late tie the game in the fourth on an RBI groundout.

In the sixth, senior Eden Ambrose (Hugo, Minn.) scored the go-ahead run on Stockman's single to left.

Senior Alyssa Kosta (Redding, Calif.) and junior Kassidy Cunningham (Portage La Prairie, Manitoba) combined for the no-hitter. This was the first no-hitter since April 25, 2017 at North Central.

Stockman went 2-3 with two RBI.

In the second game of the day, the Cobbers took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout. They added three in the third, which included a two-run homer over the centerfield fence, which made it 4-0.

BLC tallied four in the fourth which included consecutive RBI singles from sophomore Liz Milam (Le Sueur, Minn.) and Halbach, which sliced the margin to one. The Vikings tied the game on their next trip to the plate as junior Zoe Kinakin (Victoria, British Columbia) scored on freshman Ana Christofferson's (Mankato, Minn.) RBI groundout.

Concordia answered with a two-run single in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead at 6-5.

Halbach and Kinakin each went 2-4.

Bethany returns to the field tomorrow at 7 a.m.
