Johnnies Take Both From Vikings

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn.—Saint John's (7-0 overall) took both games of the doubleheader against Bethany Lutheran (1-6) Sunday.

In the first game, the Vikings took the early 2-0 lead as they capitalized on three errors. The Johnnies got on the board in the third inning on an RBI double to right centerfield.

Freshman Ben Hopper's (North Mankato, Minn.) RBI triple to rightfield drove in classmate Reed Brown (St. Michael, Minn.) to make it 3-1 in the top of the fourth.

SJU added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to even it at three all and pushed two across in the sixth to regain the lead at 5-3. Bethany was retired in order to give the first game to the home team.

In the finale, BLC took the early 1-0 lead as junior Ross Beumer (Northfield, Minn.) scored on a wild pitch.

The Johnnies tied it in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single through the right side. SJU would add three runs in each of the next two innings to take the 7-1 lead.

The Vikings batted around in the fourth and tallied four runs, which included a two-run single up the middle from Hopper which sliced the margin to two (7-5).

Saint John's plated two in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to seal the sweep.

The Vikings return to the field Wednesday when they travel to face Gustavus in a nine-inning game at 2 p.m.
