ASHLAND, Wis. – The Bethany Lutheran baseball team (13-13 overall, 11-4 UMAC) moved its winning streak to six as it claimed both games against Northland (5-22, 3-9) Saturday. The Vikings defeated the Lumberjacks 10-1 in the first game and 17-0 in seven innings in the finale.
Bethany Lutheran had an 11-hit attack in game one, and nine different players had hits. Junior Carter Wendlandt (Minneapolis) was 2-5 with a double and two RBI. Classmate Ross Beumer (Northfield, Minn.) also finished 2-5 with a triple and an RBI.
Junior Brody Curtiss (Belle Plaine, Minn.) pitched six complete innings and fanned a career-high 12.
In game two, the Vikings scored three runs in the third and fourth innings to earn a lead they would never relinquish. Bethany Lutheran scored nine runs in the top of the seventh to clinch the seven-inning win.
The Vikings' 18 hit attack featured six players with multiple hits. Sophomore Hunter Pearce (Berthoud, Colo.) was 3-4 with a double and two RBI. Classmate Alec Gratz (Mankato, Minn.) was 3-4 with an RBI. Junior Kaylan Legred (Blue Earth, Minn.), sophomore Vaughn Pouncy (St. Paul), Wendlandt and Beumer each had two hits. Wendlandt knocked in four runs and Beumer drove in three.
Sophomore Daniel Salinas (St. Paul) and junior Connor Merton (Perth, Australia) teamed up for a four-hit shutout on the mound and Bethany Lutheran played errorless defense.
The Vikings have scored 10 or more runs in four consecutive games for the first time since doubleheader sweeps of Northland and Martin Luther on April 20 and 24 of 2019.
Bethany Lutheran will wrap up its regular season Friday, May 14 when it hosts North Central. The first game against the Rams will be a makeup from a postponed game on April 20
th, and the second game will be a nonconference tilt. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
