Women's Soccer Falls to Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethany women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into the half on Saturday against th University of Northwestern but couldn't hold on as they fell by a score of 2-1. With the loss the Vikings fall to 4-4-1 overall and 3-2 in conference play while the Eagles move to 3-5-2 overall and 3-0-2 in the UMAC.

"After an energetic start to the game today which resulted in a fantastic header by Olaitz on a perfect corner from Asia, we went into halftime with a lot of momentum," said Head Coach Emma Morris. "Unfortunately in the second half we were outworked and struggled to carry over our momentum. We have to become more consistent for 90 minutes and also from one game to the next. Our defense really played well today and did a great job holding off a good attacking side."

The Vikings got the scoring started early in this one as it took just over seven and a half minutes for them to get on the board. They received a corner kick and out of it Asia Jota was able to find Olaitz Azkue for Bethany's only first half shot on net that Azkue would put home for a 1-0 advantage. Northwestern was able to put one shot on net also in the first half that Brooke Wolanin would save as the Vikings would take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The home team came out on the attack in the second half, firing three shots on net in the first 5:07. The Eagles kept up their attack in the coming minutes and found the back of the net for the equalizer in the 51st minute to even things at 1-1. The Vikings got a pair of corners and a shot on net just over 15 minutes into the second half, but Northwestern stood tall and were able to fend them off. In the 64th minute, an Eagle corner would find them what became the game winning goal, as they were able to net a second ball to take a 2-1 lead. The Vikings were able to get a few shots on net late including two in the final three minutes by Elena Luján Rubio but Northwestern would hang on for the 2-1 victory.

Wolanin played all 90 in net, making five saves while allowing the two goals.
