UW-Superior Claims Doubleheader of Weekend Series

SUPERIOR, Wis.-- The Bethany Lutheran baseball team (7-10 overall, 3-3 UMAC) fell in both games of the doubleheader of the weekend series to UW-Superior (7-13, 3-2). The Yellowjackets won the opener 7-0 and claimed the second game 4-2 on a walkoff two-run homer.
 
UWS jumped to a 5-0 lead after the first inning, and added two more in the third on an RBI double and sac fly.
 
Senior Jake LaBerge (Round Rock, Texas) recorded the lone extra base hit in the contest with his double in the fifth.
 
The 'Jackets jumped to an early lead in the second game at 1-0 on an RBI groundout in the first.
 
The Vikings evened the game in the seventh as LaBerge drove in junior Ben Hopper (North Mankato, Minn.) on his RBI groundout to second.
 
In its next at-bats, UWS used a solo homer to take the 2-1 lead in the seventh.
 
In the eighth, freshman Aidan Russell (Gilbert, Ariz.) hit a leadoff double, moved to second on junior Vaughn Pouncy's (St. Paul, Minn.) groundout, and scored on freshman Malachi Santiago's (Gilbert, Ariz.) groundout to short, to knot it at two all.
 
The Vikings were retired in order in the ninth.
 
UW-Superior had two outs with a runner on first who reached on a walk. The next batter hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to win in walkoff fashion.
 
These two teams return to the field tomorrow for the single nine-inning game in the series at 2:30 p.m.
