Vikings Swept By Yellowjackets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SUPERIOR, Wis.—The Bethany Lutheran softball team (14-11 overall, 4-2 UMAC) fell in both games of the doubleheader to first-place UW-Superior (15-5, 4-0) Saturday. UWS won the first game 4-1 and used a walkoff grand slam to claim the second game 5-1 in eight innings. This was the first extra inning game of the season for BLC.

In the opener, the Yellowjackets took the 1-0 lead in the second on a sac fly. They added three more in the fifth on three hits to extend their lead to 4-0.

Junior Katelyn Halbach (Osage, Iowa) ended the shutout as she scored on freshman Kaija Mork (Sioux Falls, SD) sac fly to center in the sixth.

Halbach led the team at the plate as she went 2-3. Senior Alyssa Kosta (Redding, Calif.) pitched her fourth complete game of the season and fanned two.

The loss halted the Vikings' five-game winning streak.

The finale was scoreless until the sixth inning. Halbach scored the first run again as she crossed the plate on Mork's single through the right side.

UWS knotted the score in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single up the middle.

In the eighth, the Yellowjackets hit a leadoff triple to right. The next batter drew a walk and stole second. The third batter walked to load the bases with no outs. The fourth batter launched a walk off grand slam over the left field fence to win it 5-1.

Bethany returns to action on the road Wednesday as it travels west for a twinbill against Martin Luther at 3:30 p.m.
