Men's Soccer Suffers 2-1 Loss to UW-Eau Claire

Box Score EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. - The Bethany men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Thursday night. With the loss the Vikings move to 2-1-2 on the season while the Blugolds move to 7-0.

It did not take long for UW-Eau Claire to get going as they got a corner just 45 seconds into the game and were able to get a goal out of it for a 1-0 lead. Things cooled off the rest of the first half though, as the teams traded possession and shots and the Blugolds held a one-goal lead at the break.

Midway through the second, things started to get contentious and the Vikings took a hit when they were given a red card and had to play the final 17 minutes a man down. With just under 10 minutes to play and Eau Claire on the attack, Sam Irsfeld seemed to cleanly play a ball out of the back of the Viking zone which would have awarded a corner, but a Blugold hit the ground after Irsfeld's play and was awarded a penalty kick. UW-Eau Claire was able to convert and take a 2-0 lead with 9:27 to play.

Bethany played fired up after the tough luck, and it would pay off with just under four minutes to play. They were able to touch the ball around in the attacking zone before it would find the foot of Agostino Quadrio Curzio who would swing a left-footed kick in from outside the box to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Vikings would get a shot off late but fell short as the Blugolds held on for victory.

Nick Lundberg got the start in net and made six saves while allowing the two goals.

The Vikings are next in action Saturday when they host Martin Luther for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
