Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Bethany volleyball team played UW-Superior Saturday and dropped the match 3-1. With the loss the Vikings fall to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in the UMAC while the Yellowjackets move to 7-7 and 3-0 and in conference.
The two teams opened the match playing back-and-forth with the teams eventually coming to a 13-13 tie. The Yellojackets would rally though and take a 19-15 lead before seven straight points from the Vikings put them in front 22-19. The two teams would trade a point each before the home team rattled off five straight to take a 25-22 set victory. In the second set the teams went punch for punch early on with neither team gaining an edge until Superior took a 15-13 lead midway through. Bethany would cut the deficit to one twice but UW-Superior scored five of the last six points to take the second set 25-20.
As the teams started set number three it looked like the Yellowjackets may complete the sweep as they jumped out to a 12-9 and eventually 18-13 lead. The Vikings went on a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to one but two straight Superior points pushed their lead to 21-18. Bethany would close the set on a high note though, rattling off seven of the last eight points to take the set 25-22 and extend the match. After the Vikings jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the fourth, a big Superior run proved to be the difference. They would go on a 15-4 run to take a 20-15 lead and didn't look back as they took the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
Lex Morsching had a standout match for the Vikings, notching a team-best 16 kills, 26 digs, and four service aces. Esther Peeters and Paloma Garcia de Fuentes split setting duties with 16 and 14 assists, respectively, while Maddi Wendland was next in line behind Morsching in digs with 17.
The Vikings are next in action Tuesday when they play their first home match of the season with No. 14 Gustavus at 7 p.m.
