Vikings Extend Winning Streak to Five with Win Over Knights

MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team hosted Martin Luther on Wednesday night and claimed a decisive 5-1 victory. With the win the Vikings move to 9-3-1 overall and 8-1-0 in the UMAC while the Knights fall to 3-8-2 overall and 2-5-2 in the conference.

Bethany got the scoring started in the third minute of this one as Olaitz Azkue Muguruza scored off a header after Elena Luján Rubio placed a perfect corner kick for the early 1-0 advantage. The Vikings would then strike again three minutes later, as Googie Mueller would drop a pass off to Lujan Rubio who would fire one past the MLC keeper for the 2-0.

It was then in the 22nd minute that Bethany would strike again, as Mia Johnson played a low cross all the way through the defense and found Riley Ping on the far side with Ping beating the keeper for the 3-0 lead. Johnson would then tally another assist in the 33rd minute as Bella Garza was able to play a ball out of the air and knock it into the right side of the net to put the Vikings up 4-0 headed to the half.

Bethany would then cap off their scoring in the 62nd minute of the game as Lujan Rubio would once again connect with Azkue with the latter gaining her second header goal of the contest to put Bethany up 5-0.

MLC would score their only goal of the contest in the 73rd minute, as they fired a shot from well outside the box that goalkeeper Ema Cortes Carvalho would make a great save on, but the rebound would be knocked in by the Knights for the 5-1 final.

Brooke Wolanin, Arayah Baker, and Cortes Carvalho would combine for eight saves in the match.

The Vikings will next be in action on Saturday when they host UW-Superior at 1:00 p.m.
