ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team faced off with Northwestern on Tuesday night and fell by a score of 2-1. With the loss the Vikings fall to 9-5-1 overall and 8-3-0 in the UMAC while the Eagles fall to 8-6-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the conference.
Northwestern kicked off the match and scored in the first minute, as reigning UMAC Player of the Year Haley Mersberger was able to take advantage of a misplayed ball by the Vikings for a tap in goal.
The Eagles would strike again in the 38th minute, as they gained a corner and the ball crossed in would get past a few players before bouncing past the goalkeeper into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
After being held scoreless the first 84 minutes of the game,
Elena Luján Rubio would score on a free kick from just outside the box in the 85th minute to cut the deficit to one as she shot ricocheted off an Eagle player and into the side of the net for her 12th goal of the season. Bethany however, couldn't' net the equalizing goal late as UNW took the 2-1 victory.
Arayah Baker got the start in net and made seven saves in the loss.
The Vikings are next in action on Saturday when they host Northland at 1 p.m.
