MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran volleyball team traveled to Augsburg for a nonconference contest on Wednesday and fell to the Auggies in three sets. With the loss the Vikings fall to 7-17 overall while Augsburg moves to 15-13.
The Auggies set the tone in this one and it was a theme for the night as they got out a quick start to the set by taking a 7-0 lead. Bethany would fight back and cut the lead to 9-8 before eventually evening things at 14. The Vikings would take their first lead of the match at 17-16 after a
Riley Sammon kill before the Auggies pushed back to take a 20-18 edge. They would hang onto that lead and take five of the last eight points to win the first 25-21.
Augsburg would once again get out to a lead in the second as they claimed a 5-2 edge early. The Vikings would respond 10-2 run of their own as they would claim a 12-7 lead near the midway point of the set. The home team would once again respond, as they went on a 14-3 run to re-take the lead and push it to 21-15. Bethany would get seven of the next nine points to pull within one, but a pair of Augsburg kills would end the set.
The home team once again got out to a quick start in the final frame, jumping out to an 8-1 lead thanks to a handful of kills on the attack. They would push that lead to 17-9 but Bethany wouldn't go away quietly, clawing back into things as they would cut the deficit to two points at 21-19. From there, they would go on to claim four of the last six points to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
Kate Maag had a great match for the Vikings, tallying eight kills on 22 attacks for a .318 attack percentage while also notching five blocks.
Lexiss Trygg also had a great match at the net as she had six kills to go along with 10 blocks which is just one off the program record.
Paloma Garcia De Fuentes led the distribution effort as she dished out 23 assists in the contest while
Maddi Wendland led the back row with 12 digs.
Bethany is back in action on Friday when they travel to Northland for a 7 p.m. contest.
