Men’s Soccer Wins 4-0 Over Northland to Advance to UMAC Championship

MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran men's soccer team hosted Northland in a UMAC semifinal matchup on Wednesday night and controlled the match from the start, rolling to a 4-0 win to advance to their third straight UMAC Championship. With the win the Vikings improve to 13-6-2 on the year while the LumberJacks conclude their season at 9-10-2.

Bethany didn't take long to strike first in this one, as Ben Klausen took one up the right side and dropped it to the near side of the box to Jamie van Wijland who set himself and fired a right footed shot into the upper left hand corner for a 1-0 Vikings lead.

The LumberJacks then started to gain possession and were able to get a few decent chances at net but Bethany would halt that momentum in the 39th minute as they gained a counterattack and Lorenzo Falleti snuck one through the defense to Danny Almeida who would push one past the keeper for the 2-0 lead.

The two teams would battle back and forth in the early parts of the second half before the Vikings started to gain some momentum near the midway point. They would fire a few shots on the Northland keeper that were saved in the 71st minute before Raheem Graham would connect for a goal in the 74th on a loose ball to put Bethany up 3-0.

The Vikings would add one more goal in the 84th minute as Sam Irsfeld found Almeida to give the home team a 4-0 lead they would hold onto for the victory.

Nick Lundberg got the win in net, making two saves in the contest.

Bethany will now travel to UW-Superior on Saturday for the third straight year for the UMAC Championship.
