Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran men's soccer team scored two goals in the final eight minutes on Tuesday afternoon to escape with a 3-1 win at Martin Luther College. With the win the Vikings move to 4-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the UMAC while the Knights fall to 2-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the conference.
After Bethany got a few shots early in this one, MLC set the tone for the rest of the match as the first half progressed. The Knights would continue to keep the ball in the attacking end, not allowing a Vikings shot for the final 33 minutes of the half.
Nick Lundberg was strong in net for Bethany, saving the only two shots he faced in the first 45 minutes as the teams went to the break scoreless.
In the second half, Bethany came out much stronger on the attack and it paid dividends early.
Lorenzo Falleti took a corner in the 54
th minute that landed in the scrum of bodies and bounced around a few times before
Bryan Jaimes controlled it, took one dribble, and fired it into the back of the net.
Martin Luther answered the call, scoring just two minutes later on a free kick near midfield, as the ball into the box got by the Vikings defense and was tapped in for the equalizer.
For the next 25 minutes, Bethany dominated possession offensively and near the 75
th minute,
Ben Klausen started to leave his mark on the game. The junior forward put forth a handful of tremendous runs for the Vikings and he was rewarded in the 82
nd minute, taking a pass up the left side before patiently dribbling back towards the middle of the box and eventually firing one to the left side of the net for the 2-1 lead. Less than a minute later, the Vikings would strike again, as
Gijs van Eldik received a pass just outside the box and played a perfect through ball to Falleti who punched it off the MLC keeper and in for the 3-1 score that they would hang onto for the win.
The Vikings will next be in action on Saturday when they travel to UW-Superior for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
