SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team Saturday took on UW-Superior and fell by a score of 2-1. With the result the Vikings fall to 4-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the conference while the Yellowjackets move to 4-2-1 overall and 4-0 in the UMAC.
Early on in this one, the teams would trade shots and possession, before the Yellowjackets started holding possession around the 14-minute mark. They would continue to put pressure on the Bethany defense, eventually striking for a goal in the 17
th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The two teams would then play the remaining 28 minutes of the first half scoreless as UWS led 1-0 at the break.
It wouldn't take long for Bethany to even things in half number two, as they earned a free kick with
Elena Luján Rubio playing the set piece into
Olaitz Azkue Muguruza who headed one past the Superior keeper to even the score at one. After the Viking goal both teams started to lock down defensively and the game seemed to be heading to a 1-1 draw, before UWS was able to get a breakaway with just over 10 minutes left and convert with a goal for the 2-1 lead. The Vikings would get a few chances but couldn't convert in the final 10 minutes as the Yellowjackets held on for the win.
Brooke Wolanin made one save in net in the loss.
Bethany will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Crown College at 7 p.m.
