Women's Soccer Claims Decisive Win Over Eagles

MANKATO, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team claimed a UMAC playoff berth on Tuesday night with a 4-2 win over Northwestern. With the win the Vikings move to 7-6-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the UMAC while the Eagles fall to 4-9-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the conference.

The Vikings controlled possession early in the contest and were able to get a handful of good looks in the early going but it wasn't until the 24th minute that they would find the back of the net.

Ashley Casper would line up for a free kick from well outside the box and play one right in front of the net, and with the Eagle keeper expecting a touch off the mass of a players in front it took a bounce up and over for the early goal.

Just two minutes later the Vikings would gain a goal on some beautiful combination play, as Elena Luján Rubio and Olaitz Azkue Muguruza would each take a touch with the latter finding Riley Ping for a knock in goal to make it 2-0.

Bethany wasn't done there though, as Reese Moorad would then notch a goal to make it 3-0 in the 32nd minute as Azkue would deliver a great pass.

Northwestern answered less than a minute later, sending a cross in that was headed home to make it 3-1.

After the half, the Vikings would control pace early again and had a few chances early before capitalizing in the 64th minute for their fourth goal.

It was Moorad who collected the goal, as Azkue would take a rocket shot that was saved but would pop up behind the keeper with Moorad punching it home for her second of the contest.

UNW would get a goal in the 77th minute to cut the deficit to two but that was as close as they would get as Arayah Baker would stand tall in net late to preserved the victory.

Bethany will now have over a week off before hosting Crown next Wednesday.
