MANKATO, Minn. - On the final day of the Dome Invitational, the Bethany Lutheran softball team split a pair of contests. The Vikings, who move to 4-4 with the results, fell to Saint Mary's 3-0 in the morning before defeating St. Catherine 3-2 in eight innings in the second contest.
Saint Mary's 3 - 0 Bethany
The game played scoreless through the first three innings, with the Vikings managing just one hit.
Kayla Senne was strong on the mound for Bethany though, allowing just two hits and striking out five through three complete.
Saint Mary's would scratch across their first run in the bottom of the fourth, before adding two more in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. Bethany would load the bases with just one out, but couldn't knock a hit as they stayed scoreless through five. The Vikings would have one more chance to score in the seventh but went down in order as Saint Mary's took the win.
Bethany mustered just two hits in the loss with
Kaija Mork and
Jade Krenik each tabbing singles. Senne took the loss on the mound, throwing six innings and striking out eight.
Bethany 3 - 2 St. Catherine (8 innings)
The Vikings would get on the board first in their second contest as
Katelyn Halbach would single to open the game before
Emily Doyle ripped a double to left.
Ana Christofferson picked them both up with a single as Bethany took the early 2-0 lead.
St. Kate's answered right back in the bottom half though as they opened the game with three hits to score one run before pushing one more across with some baserunning to even the game.
The first inning featured seven total hits but that wasn't indicative of how the rest of the game would go as both teams pitching staff's settled in. Neither team would score a run over the next six innings as the game would head to extras.
In the extra frame and a runner starting on second due to the international rule, the Vikings would use a sac bunt to get the runner to third to open the eighth before a passed ball would bring her across and put Bethany ahead.
After St. Kate's would get out of the inning, Senne would take to the mound again and after a great play from Christofferson at shortstop to open the inning, would get two straight strikeouts to end the game and take the win.
Senne earned the win on the mound, tossing four and a third innings scoreless and striking out eight.
Emily Doyle and
Sydney Jacobs led Bethany at the plate with a pair of hits each with Doyle also walking twice to reach base in all four at-bats.
The Vikings now have some time off before they will be back in action in just over a week when they head to Florida for their spring trip.
