MANKATO, Minn. - Kayla Senne threw all 14 innings of the Bethany Lutheran softball team's doubleheader with Gustavus, earning a pair of victories as the Vikings claimed 4-2 and 2-0 decisions. With the wins BLC moves to 9-9 on the year while the Gusties fall to 4-6.
Bethany 4 - 2 Gustavus
After the Vikings would open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning of contest number one, Senne got off to a bit of a rocky start in the second. Gustavus would get a pair of two out RBI singles, with the second being a line drive that caught a piece of Senne, but the junior would tough through it and get out of the inning.Â
Bethany answered the call in the bottom of the second as they would even the game, taking advantage of a Gustie error and eventually loading the bases before pushing across a run with a bases loaded walk from
Sydney Jacobs.Â
The two teams would then trade scoreless frames for the next five half innings before the Vikings would end the drought in the fifth.
Emily Doyle would begin the rally with a one out double to right field, before
Haley Stockman would answer with a run scoring hit to left.
Ana Christofferson and
Emily Nelson would then single in back-to-back at bats to bring in Stockman and make the score 4-2.Â
That run support would be enough for Senne, who sent down the Gusties 1-2-3 in the sixth before working her way out of a jam in the seventh to secure the win.
Senne allowed five hits in the first contest along with two earned runs while striking out eight.Â
At the plate, Stockman had three hits in game one to lead the Vikings to go along with two RBI.Â
Bethany 2 - 0 Gustavus
The second game turned out to be a pitcher's duel, with Senne once again in the circle for the Vikings while Ava Hamsund stepped in for the Gusties.Â
After Senne tossed two hitless frames to open the game, Bethany would push their first run across in the bottom of the second, as Christofferson would scamper home from third on a groundout to make the score 1-0.Â
The Vikings would use crafty baserunning once again in the third to plate another run, with
Sydney Jacobs scoring all the way from second base as the Gusties were trying to turn a 4-6-3 double play to make the score 2-0.Â
From the third inning on, Bethany was held without a hit through the final three times to the plate. Fortunately for them, Senne was doing her best to keep the Gustavus hitters at bay. She would send the Gusties down 1-2-3 in the fourth and fifth innings before working around a walk in the sixth to keep them scoreless.
Gustavus didn't go away quietly though, as they would open the seventh with a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases. The Vikings would get their first out of the inning at the plate with a fielders choice to keep the Gusties scoreless, before a 5-2-3 double play ended the game and sealed the shutout for Senne.Â
Senne allowed four hits and struckout five in the second contest as she helped the Vikings to their third shutout of the season.
Bethany had just three hits in the contest, with Halbach, Jacobs, and Stockman each earning a base knock.
The Vikings will next be in action Friday, March 22, as they'll host Martin Luther College at 4:30 p.m. at Thomas Park.Â
