Baseball Splits on Day One Against Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. - The Bethany Lutheran baseball team battled for 18 innings with Puget Sound on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Loggers 6-5 in game one before falling 9-3 in game two of a doubleheader. With the results the Vikings move to 2-1 on the year while the Loggers go to 3-7.

Bethany 6 - 5 Puget Sound
The Vikings would score the first two runs of the game in the first contest as the Loggers would make an error that allowed two runs to score and gave them the early 2-0 edge.An RBI double from UPS in the bottom half followed by a solo shot in the fourth would even the game at two and end Gavin Jacobsen's day on the mound. He would finish with six strikeouts and allow just two hits in his four innings of work.

Puget Sound would add a pair of runs in the fifth inning off of reliever Trent Ash, with both being unearned due to a Viking erorr. Ash settled in though, going three innings and allowing no hits and just the two unearned runs.

After Ash tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, Bethany would do enough to get him the win in the eighth. They would use three hits, a hit batter, and a few Logger mistakes to plate three runs in the inning and put Bethany up 5-4.

Jackson Huiras would work out of a jam in the eighth before Bethany would add an insurance run in the ninth thanks to another UPS error. The extra run would prove beneficial, as Puget Sound would get a run across in the ninth and have runners on second and third with just one out, but Huiras would strike out the last two batters for the win.

Aidan Russell led the Bethany efforts in game one with two hits while four other Vikings picked up one. Ash got the win, with Huiras getting the save in relief, working two innings and striking out four.

Puget Sound 9 - 3 Bethany
The Vikings would open game two strong, with Russell and Nolan Spence picking up RBI singles in the first.

Liam Peterson would then pick up his first RBI of the year with a single in the second inning after an error allowed Malachi Santiago into scoring position.

Nate Hoffman got the start in game two and worked the first two innings, striking out five. Josh Robb would come in the third inning and pitch a shutout inning before allowing two runs in the fourth.

Puget Sound would add three more runs in the fifth to take the lead, before plating three more in the sixth and one in the eighth as they would claim the 9-3 win.

Raimundo Heredias Jr. would suffer the loss in the contest, working the fifth inning while Ty Vollmar tossed the last three innings, striking out five and allowing four runs.

Bethany would tally seven hits as a team in the second game, with Liam Peterson, Russell, and Spence each also adding a walk to reach base multiple times.

The Vikings are next in action tomorrow when they will cap off their series with UPS with a 2:30 (PST) contest.
