CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bethany Lutheran softball team Thursday afternoon played a pair of low scoring games, falling to No. 1 Trine 3-1 before defeating Waynesburg 2-0. With the results the Vikings move to 7-9 on the season.
Trine 3 - 1 Bethany
The Vikings got a fantastic effort out of starting pitcher
Kayla Senne in this one as the junior would strike out 11 batters, but the 2023 National Champion proved to be too much as they would push across two late runs to claim the win.
The Thunder would open the game with a run in the first, as they would use a single along with a wild pitch to get a runner into scoring position. One more hit would bring the run across and give them the early lead.
Bethany would respond in the bottom half, as
Sydney Jacobs would open the frame with a walk and eventually come around to score on an
Emily Doyle double to even things after one.
That was when both pitchers locked in as the game would stay at 1-1 over the next four innings. In the top of the sixth, the first three Trine hitters would reach base with the third driving a double to help plate a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead. Senne would work out of the jam though, stranding the runner at second to keep the deficit to two.Â
The Vikings couldn't muster a comeback though as the Thunder would hang on for the win.Â
Senne allowed just six hits in the contest for Bethany, while Doyle recording the only Viking hit in the contest.Â
Bethany 2 - 0 WaynesburgÂ
Kaija Mork got the start on the mound and similarly to Senne threw a great game, while also providing the pop at the plate in game two.
After a scoreless first two innings, Jacobs would get on with a single to start the third before being driven in by a Mork double to take the early 1-0 lead.Â
Mork threw two more scoreless innings, before
Emily Nelson drew a two out walk to get a runner on base in the fifth. With a runner on, Mork would knock her second RBI double of the game to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Vikings.Â
Senne would then take over in the circle in the fifth, tossing three scoreless innings and stranding a pair of runners in the seventh to secure the win.
Mork and Senne each struck out two in their stint with Mork only allowing one hit in the win.Â
