MANKATO, Minn. - It was a dominant day for Bethany Lutheran softball, as they took a pair of contests from Crown by scores of 12-0 and 3-0. With the results the Vikings move to 18-9 overall on the year and 6-0 in the UMAC while the Polars fall to 5-22 overall and 3-8 in the UMAC.
Bethany 12 - 0 Crown (5 innings)
Bethany had a big bottom of the first inning in this one, with the first three batters of the game reaching base with an
Emily Doyle single bringing in the games first run. With two runners still in score position, a ground ball back to the pitcher would be thrown home, where
Sydney Jacobs would slide in and knock the ball out of the glove of the catcher on the slide to make things 2-0.
Emily Nelson would then knock a base hit between third and short to plate two more runs and make things 4-0 after one inning of play.Â
Doyle would get another RBI single in the second inning but then it wasn't until the fourth that Bethany would score their next run. They would piece together six hits in the inning, with
Kaija Mork and Nelson each recording doubles in an inning in which the Vikings scored seven runs and all but put the game away.
Kayla Senne would put the closing stamp on things in the top of the fifth, striking out the side to seal the victory via the 8-run rule. She allowed just two hits in the game and struck out eight batters to take the win.Â
Doyle had three hits to lead Bethany while Jacobs and Nelson eached added two.Â
Bethany 3 - 0 CrownÂ
Game two was a much lower scoring affair, with Vikings starting pitcher
Emily Meyer working around a fielding error and a hit in the first to keep the Polars scoreless in the top half.Â
Jacobs and Doyle would each reach base in the bottom half, before
Haley Stockman knocked a two-out single to left to put the home team up 2-0.Â
Bethany would once again get things going in the second, with Nelson getting a hit to open the frame. She would eventually advance to third, before
Katelyn Halbach would beat out an infield single with two outs to make the score 3-0.Â
From that point forward the Viking offense would go stagnant but Meyer would pick them up on the mound by holding Crown at bay. The Polars would threaten in the seventh inning, with two walks but Senne would come in for the games final out, inducing an infield popout to secure the win.Â
Meyer struck out eight while scattering three hits to earn the win in the circle.Â
Halbach was the only Bethany player with multiple hits, as she had two to lead the six hit effort for the Vikings.Â
The two teams will face off for the series finale in Mankato tomorrow at 1 p.m.
