MANKATO, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran men's soccer team hosted No. 10 Gustavus on Wednesday night and fell by a tally of 2-0. With the loss the Vikings fall to 1-3 on the year while the Gusties move to 4-0-1.
It was Bethany who got the first great chance in this one as they would use combination play up the left side before a pass was dropped back to the middle to
Diogo Cavalcanti, with the freshman firing a shot on goal that was saved in the 18th minute. Things would then play pretty even over the next 20 minutes, with the Gusties catching a big break in the 41st minute as the Vikings would commit a foul in the box to award them a penalty kick. Vikings keeper
Nick Lundberg would save the first PK and Bethany would successfully clear, but Lundberg was called for being off the line early and another penalty would be awarded. The senior would step up again and make a diving save on the second attempt, but the ensuing rebound would go back to the kick taker who would knock it in for the 1-0 lead.Â
Half number two would once again play back and forth with a very physical style from both teams making getting good opportunities tough to come by. A counterattack by the Gusties in the 76th minute would prove fruitful for the visitors though as they would use some great combination play to get a goal from the edge of the box and take a 2-0 lead that they would hold onto the final 14 minutes for the win.
Lundberg made four saves in net in the the loss.
The Vikings will next be in action on Friday when they travel to St. Olaf for a 4:30 p.m. contest.Â
