MANKATO, Minn. - A spectacular Diogo Cavalcanti goal wasn't enough, as the Bethany Lutheran men's soccer team fell to Saint Mary's by a tally of 2-1 on Tuesday night. With the loss the Vikings fall to 1-2 while the Cardinals move to 2-0 with the win.
Things played scoreless for the first 23 minutes of this one until Cavalcanti broke the ice with one of the most impressive goals in recent program memory. With the ball being volleyed around in the box it was popped up to the freshmen near the 18 and with his back turned to the net, he tapped the ball up in the air and then bicycle kick it on the second touch up and over the SMU keeper for the goal.
After the goal the Vikings carried some momentum for the next few minutes but that all changed in the 41st minute. As Bethany seemed to be coasting to a 1-0 halftime lead, the Cardinals would gain a counterattack and the SMU player would take the ball uncontested and fire a rocket from about 30 yards out into the top right corner to even the game.
The Cardinals then scored what turned out to be the game winner under 30 seconds into the second half, as they would use a turnover to quickly go the other way and fire one home for the 2-1 lead.
Bethany didn't go away easy though, as they would tally a handful of corners late as well as have two shots saved in the closing minutes before SMU escaped with the win.
Nick Lundberg took the loss in net, making four saves in the contest. Bethany outshot SMU 13-7 in the contest, but six shots from the Cardinals were on net as opposed to five for the Vikings.
