Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Splits on Day Two in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Bethany Lutheran softball team Sunday played in a pair of contests for the spring break trip and came away with a 5-4 comeback win over Lebanon Valley in game one before a 9-2 loss to Aurora in game two.

Bethany Lutheran 5 - 4 Lebanon Valley

The Vikings got the scoring started early in game one as Addie Ahern led off with a double and would come around to score after a Bethany sacrifice bunt followed by a Kaija Morksacrifice fly.

Mork would toss two scoreless innings to open game one before Avery Carlson relieved her and ran into some trouble in the third due to a few free passes as well as two Bethany errors which helped LVC plate four runs.

Emily Doyle would help the Vikings get a run back in the fourth, as she blasted a solo shot to left field, and singles from Carly Nelson and Jolyne LeClair kept a two-out threat alive but a flyout would end the inning.

Becca Kuck, who came in to close out the third inning would go on to toss the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings and allowed just one hit but Bethany couldn't scratch any runs out in their half innings as Lebanon Valley still led 4-2.

Down two runs headed to the seventh once again, Bethany would orchestrate a comeback for their second straight day and it started with a Orla Keys one-out single followed by a Dutchmen error on the next play. Ahern then singled to bring in one run before a wild pitch would move two Vikings into score position. Carly Nelson would then groundout with a run scoring before Mork delivered a two-out single up the middle to put the Vikings on top 5-4 headed to the bottom of the seventh.

Emily Meyer would come in during the final inning and work around a single as she was able to record the save to seal the Bethany victory.

Kuck earned the win on the mound, working 3.2 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit and four walks, while Ahern and Bryn Weidner led Bethany at the plate with a pair of hits.

Aurora 9 - 2 Bethany Lutheran

Meyer would get the start in the circle in game two on the day and the Spartans had her number from the start as she would give up three hits and two free passes with three runners scoring before making way for Kuck with two outs in the first. Kuck then struggled to find the zone as she gave up a single followed by two bases loaded walks to allow three more to score to make things 6-0.

Bethany would get one back in the bottom of the first after Weidner reached on an error and would come around to score on an Aliya Edbom-Kehler double to left.

Mork then came on to pitch in the second for Bethany and would allow just one run in the top of the third to keep the Vikings in it. She would give up three hits in the fourth, but Carlson came up with a big play by gunning a runner out at home plate to end the inning and keep the Spartans off the board.

The Vikings then got one back in the bottom of the inning, as Carly Nelson, LeClair, and Keys would each reach before an Anna Lee fielder's choice would plate one to make it 7-2.

Mork was then chased in the top of the sixth after three hits and walk brought two more runners home for AU. Meyer would come back in and the Spartans would attempt a failed squeeze play and she would get a strikeout looking to make it 9-2.

Bethany would get just one runner in scoring position in the final two innings as Mork would double to left center in the seventh but they couldn't push her across as they dropped their first contest in Florida.

The Vikings had eight hits in the contest with Mork, Edbom-Kehler and Keys each recording two.

They'll have two days off now before they're back in action on Wednesday when they take on Dominican (Ill.) and Trine.
