NEW ULM, Minn. - Kaija Mork threw a complete game shutout Friday as the Bethany Lutheran softball team claimed a 5-0 win over Martin Luther. With the win the Vikings move to 11-8 overall and 1-0 in the UMAC while the Knights fall to 0-11 on the year and 0-1 in the conference.
Hear From the Vikings
Here's what head coach Angela Dabu and starting pitcher Kaija Mork had to say about the day.
Dabu: "Good to get our first conference win although there's always room for improvement. Solid defense today and we are looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
Mork: "Although we had a little bit of a slow start on offense, I think our defense proved its strength today which is fun to see. Once we get the bats rolling right away tomorrow it will be exciting to see what we can do."
Inside the Box Score
It was a quick first two innings from both teams and wasn't until the top of the third that the Vikings would find the scoring column.
Anna Lee would open things up with a walk and, after a sacrifice bunt, she would come around to score on a
Bryn Weidner single.
The Vikings would double their tally in the fourth, as
Emily Doyle opened up the inning with a triple, before
Aliya Edbom-Kehler brought her in with a sac fly to make it 2-0.
After a scoreless fifth from both sides, Bethany would add another on in the top of the sixth. They would load the bases with three straight singles before
Hayven Linn would steal home on the throw back from the catcher to make it 3-0.
Bethany would then add two more in the top of the seventh inning as Mork knocked an RBI single before
Carly Nelson brought her home later in the inning to make it 5-0.
In the bottom half, Mork would work around a bases loaded jam, striking out two batters in a row to seal the win.
Mork struck out nine in the complete game win, allowing just five hits and no free passes. Offensively, Weider, Mork, and Doyle all had two hits for Bethany to lead the way.
The two teams will match back up again tomorrow for a doubleheader, with first pitch at 1 p.m.
