Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Bethany Lutheran softball team Thursday completed their spring trip games with a pair of victories. The Vikings first overcame a 3-0 first inning deficit to defeat Allegheny 4-3 before an 14-5 win over Elizabethtown in game two.
Bethany 4 - 3 Allegheny
The Vikings got off to a slow start in game one as a defensive error extended the inning with the Gators bringing three runs across with two outs to go up 3-0.
It wasn't until the third that Bethany would respond, as
Addie Ahern and
Bryn Weidner would each single before
Emily Doyle brought both home with a double to cut the deficit to one.
Carly Nelson would then double with two outs in the inning to bring in another run and even the game at three.
After a troublesome first inning,
Emily Meyer settled in and didn't allow a hit over the next four inning. Bethany would then push across what proved to be the game winning run in the fifth, as
Kaija Mork would triple before a Doyle sac fly made it 4-3.
After the sixth inning for Allegheny started with a walk followed by a double play, the Gators would get a single and double to put runners at second and third. Meyer was able to work out of the inning though by getting a flyout to keep the one run lead intact.
Bethany would load the bases in the sixth with just one out but the Gators would work their way out to trail by just one headed to the last. They would get a one out hit in the seventh and bunt the runner to second base, but a groundout would end the game and give the Vikings the win.
Meyer got the complete game win in the contest, allowing no earned runs and striking out six in the win. Three Vikings had two hits in the contest as Ahern, Weidner, and Carly Nelson led the 10-hit effort.
Bethany 14 - 5 Elizabethtown
The Vikings got things rolling early in game two as a pair of Blue Jay errors would allow a run to score and put a runner in scoring position. Doyle would then double to plate one run before a Carly Nelson single brought in another to make it 3-0. Mork would take game two in the circle and Elizabethtown would get three hits in the bottom of the first but she would strand the bases loaded to hold the lead after one.
Bethany would tack four more runs in the second, as Weidner and Mork would each drive in one run before Nelson plated two with a single to make it 7-0.
Becca Kuck then came on to pitch for the Vikings and would run into some trouble in her first inning after allowing two hits and a pair of walks, but the Blue Jays would just get one as Kuck would work out of the jam.
Weidner would get another RBI single in the third following an Ahern triple and Kuck would settle in in the circle as she set Elizabethtown in order in the bottom half to keep it at 8-1.
The Vikings kept the scoring going in the fourth, as Orla Keys would drive in two runs with a triple, before eventually coming home to score on a some heads up baserunning to make it 11-1. The Blue Jays would take advantage of a Bethany error in the bottom half a they would bring one across to make it 11-2.
Aliya Edbom-Kehler would then drive one in during the top of the fifth inning after she would drive in a run with a triple, but Elizabethtown would extend the game in the bottom half using a pair of walks and two hits to plate three and make it 12-5 after five.
