DECORAH, Iowa - The Bethany women's soccer team lost 5-1 at Luther in the season opener Friday night.
The Norse jumped out to a quick lead with goal just 2:02 into the match. They added goals in the 10th, 29th, and 30th minutes for a 4-0 advantage at half, while out-shooting the Vikings 11-3.
Bethany out-shot the home team 9-6 in the second half, but the Norse added their fifth goal at the 55:17 mark. The Vikings ended the shutout at the 86:01 mark as Mia Johnson netted the first goal of the season.
Luther ended with a 17-12 shots advantage (11-5 on goal) and had four more corner kick opportunities. Fouls were even at seven apiece.
Arayah Baker made six saves in goal.
Bethany next hosts its home opener Wednesday against Gustavus. Kickoff from Scheels Field is set for 4:30 p.m.
