SAINT PETER, Minn. - Ted Tendaie's hat trick on Wednesday propelled Bethany men's soccer to a 4-3 win at Gustavus. The Vikings earn their first win in program history over the Gusties (dating back to 2009) and are now 7-5-1 overall.
Gustavus got on the board first thanks to a penalty kick goal in the 16th minute. But two minutes later, the Vikings evened the score with a PK goal of their own off the foot of Tendaie.
Bethany then took a 2-1 lead at the 26:40 mark thanks to another penalty kick goal from Tendaie. Five minutes after that, Jamie van Wijland rifled a shot from 30 yards and spotted the upper left corner for his second goal of the season. The Gusties got one back with less than four minutes remaining in the half and the Vikings took a 3-2 lead into the break.
Tendaie completed the hat trick in the 62nd minute with the help of Pedro Henrique Meira de Morais. Tendaie now leads the Vikings with nine goals this season.
Bethany scored an own goal in the 74th minute, cutting its lead down to one, but the Vikings were able to run out the clock for the win.
Brady Price made eight saves in the win. Gustavus outshot Bethany 23-10 overall and 10-5 on goal. The home team also had 12 corners compared to one by the Vikings.
Bethany is back home for conference play Saturday afternoon against Crown. The Vikings beat the Polars 2-0 on Sept. 22.
