SUPERIOR, Wis. - The UMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships kicked off Friday at UW-Superior and after day one the Viking women sit at sixth place with a total of 18 points, while the men are tied for fifth with 17 points.
Some key performances from Samantha Kedsch in the long jump, where she took first place with a jump of 5.24 meters, and Nika Pittenger in javelin where her throw of 37.40 meters slotted her in second place. Taryn Zellmann also has a chance to score tomorrow in the 100-meter dash, as she placed eighth in the preliminary round with a time of 13.19 seconds.
For the men, Brandon Kellett, Ben Matzke, and Matthew Koosman were the scorers from the first day. Kellett started the scoring in the pole vault, where his height of 3.90 meters landed him in second place. Ben Matzke then took fifth in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 2:00.66. Then Koosman closed out the scoring in the 400-meter hurdles, where he also set a new personal best time of 58.91 seconds, which placed him in fourth.
The second day of events starts at 11:00 a.m. for the field events, and 12:30 p.m. for the track events.
