Saint Paul, Minn. — No. 2 seed Bethany Lutheran opened UMAC Tournament play with a postseason statement Friday, shutting out No. 3 seed UW-Superior 2-0 behind a dominant complete-game performance from Emily Meyer and another clutch home run from Addie Ahern.
The Vikings struck first in the opening inning when Bryn Weidner doubled into scoring position before Carly Nelson came through with an RBI single to give Bethany Lutheran a 1-0 lead.
Addie Ahern added an important insurance run in the second inning, launching a solo home run to extend the Vikings' advantage to 2-0 and continue her standout offensive run.
From there, Emily Meyer took control in the circle. The Bethany Lutheran ace delivered a complete-game shutout with 10 strikeouts, silencing the third-seeded Yellowjackets and working through late pressure to preserve the postseason win. Meyer stranded a seventh-inning threat to seal the Vikings' opening-round victory. The last out of the game, Paige Haala made a game saving bare handed catch to secure the Viking victory.
The Vikings will wait until later today to find out who they will play tomorrow morning, 5/8, at 11 am. They will face the winner of Northwestern and Minnesota Morris.Â
