Mankato, Minn. - It was a frustrating end to an exceptional season for the men's soccer team. The Vikings played their last game of the season falling 3-2 to Minnesota- Morris in overtime during the UMAC semifinals.
The Cougars scored near the end of the first half to put the Vikings behind 1-0 going into the locker room. Then, in the second half three goals were scored in two minutes for some exciting soccer action.
First, Bethany Lutheran’s Joe Nuah (St. Paul, Minn./Arlington) found the back of the net at the 57:37 mark unassisted off a throw in. MN-Morris answered right back in the 58th minute, but the Vikings would not give up. Leading scorer CK Pock (Faribault, Minn./Faribault) tied up the game at 59:28 with a header past the Cougar’s keeper off the boot by Jimmy DuTremaine (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy) who was credited with the assist.
The two teams continued to battle it out for the remaining 30 minutes. Bethany was outshot by Morris 20-15. However, at the end of regulation, the game was still tied and the teams prepared for overtime.
After just two minutes, a foul was called in the box by the Vikings that was argued by many. This resulted in a penalty kick and a goal for Minnesota-Morris ending the game, and the season for Bethany Lutheran.
The Vikings had a record breaking season advancing to the UMAC post-season tournament for the first time in school history. They also posted the best men’s soccer record seen at Bethany Lutheran since joining the NCAA Division III and UMAC finishing 12-8-1 overall, and 9-4-1 in the conference.
