Tennis takes on MN-Morris and St. Scholastica

St. Peter, Minn. - The Viking tennis teams took on the Minnesota-Morris Cougars and the St. Scholastica Saints over the weekend. The men were able to defeat the Cougars 8-1, but fell to preseason favorites St. Scholastica 0-9.

The women’s tennis team was unable to get a win falling 3-6 to Minnesota-Morris, and then 0-9 to the Saints.

The Vikings were dominant over the Cougars, the only loss they suffered was in a close doubles match. Felipe Ortega (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) had the most impressive performance taking his opponent in two sets 6-1, and 6-2. Randy Zavala (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) the Vikings number one got the win 6-4, 6-1. Ben Schroeder (Minneapolis, Minn./Dakota County CC) also only needed two sets defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-3.

The match against St. Scholastica was tough as the Saints already had 12 matches under their belt. All the competitions finished in just two sets.

The women’s tennis team had Madara Matveja (Latvia/Riga Secondary), Sarah Wagner (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central Area Secondary), and Alyssa Rau (Sarona, Wis./Rice Lake) winning sets against Minnesota-Morris. Each completed their victory in two sets. Like the men, St. Scholastica’s already experienced squad caught up with the Vikings. Bethany Lutheran was unable to win a game.

The next match will be against Northwestern in Fridley, Minnesota. The conference competition is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
