Bloomington, Minn. - The men and women’s tennis teams took on Northwestern for a conference match yesterday. The women were able to get two game wins falling to the Eagles 2-7. The men were not able to find their grove losing 0-9.
On the women’s side, Sarah Wagner (Elbow Lake, Minn. / West Central Area Secondary) defeated her opponent in two sets 6-4, 6-1. Alyssa Rau (Sarona, Wis. / Rice Lake) was the other Viking to get in the win column; her game went into three sets 7-5, 4-6, and 10-5.
Rebecca Kopacek (Maple Grove, Minn. / Osseo), Madara Matveja (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary), and Brook Osmundson (Delavan, Minn. / Maple River) didn’t make it easy for their Northwestern competitor fighting hard for points. Each of their games went into three sets.
For the men, after defeating Minnesota-Morris and being shut-out by St. Scholastia the Vikings were looking to add another conference win. However, Bethany Lutheran met a stacked Northwestern team that didn’t give up one point in the singles competition.
Only in the doubles competition did the Vikings find some success. The pair of Felipe Ortega (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) and Randy Zavala (Worthington, Minn./Worthington), and the pair of Nicholas Croy (Tacoma, Wash. / Evergreen Lutheran) and Peter Vue (Minneapolis, Minn. / Cooper) were also able to score a point.
The men and women will take on Minnesota-Morris in St. Peter tomorrow for another UMAC match-up. The games will begin at 4 p.m.
