St. Peter, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran tennis team took on Minnesota-Morris for the second time this season on Saturday. Both the men’s and women’s team were able to come away with a win.
The men’s tennis team defeated the Cougars in the last match-up with help from a few forfeits by MN-Morris players. However, this time around the Cougars dressed a whole squad and the Vikings were still able to get a 6-3 win.
Felipe Ortega (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-1. Ben Schroeder (Minneapolis, Minn./Dakota County CC) also took his opponent down in two sets 6-1, 6-2. Eric DeBruzzi (Carlisle, Mass./Concord Carlisle) got his first win of the year beating his competitor in three close sets 7-5, 4-6, and 10-3. Nicholas Croy (Tacoma, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) added a point for Bethany winning his singles match 6-4, 6-4.
The team of Schroeder and DeBruzzi won in the doubles competition 8-5. Croy and partner Aaron Wiechmann defeated MN-Morris with a score of 8-4.
Despite falling to Minnesota-Morris in the last competition a week ago, the women’s tennis team was able to defeat the Cougars 8-1 this time around. The women cleaned house winning all the doubles competitions, and getting all but one win in the singles competition.
The Vikings number one Rebecca Kopacek (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Madara Matveja (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary) and Brooke Osmundson (Delavan, Minn./Maple River) both took their Cougar counterpart in two sets 6-2, 6-1. Ellen Tommerdahl (Champlin, Minn./West Lutheran) got the win in three sets, while Alyssa Rau (Sarona, Wis./Rice Lake) defeated her opponent in two.
Team Kopacek and Matveja won their doubles competition handily 8-2, as did Osumndson and Rau. Sarah Wagner (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central Area Secondary) and Marta Faugstad (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) teamed up for a doubles game and took the match 8-4.
The women’s tennis team will host UW-Stout on April 9th for a nonconference match. The men won’t take the court until hosting Martin Luther on April 11th at 3 p.m.
