Box Score Late Goals Propel Men's Soccer to Victory
MANKATO, Minn. – The men's soccer team played host to Northwestern on Saturday at the Bethany Soccer Field. The game was featured as the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game of the week as the Vikings entered play with a (1-7-2, 1-3-1) record compared to the Eagles record of (3-6, 3-2). The Vikings scored two late goals to defeat the Eagles by a final score of 2-0 to earn their second conference victory of the season.
The game remained scoreless through the first 76 minutes of the contest until senior
Jorge Perez (Colorado Springs, Colo./Fountain Fort Carson) capitalized on a Northwestern penalty that resulted in a successful penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead. The goal for
Perez was his sixth goal of the season. Ten minutes later
Kenny Johnson (Otsego, Minn./Rogers) sealed the deal with his third goal of the season with the assist from
Jason Buechler (Kasson, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville) to bring the Vikings lead to 2-0.
Matt Bitter (Bemidji, Minn.) started in goal for the Vikings and earned the shutout victory with six saves on the afternoon.
The Bethany soccer team will be back in action on Monday, October 5 when they travel to St. Olaf for a non-conference game. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
