BECKER, Minn. – Junior Hayley Thompson (Victoria, Minn.) fired a final round 78 to win the UMAC Championships individual medalist honor. She shattered multiple records in the last round Saturday.
She set:
-UMAC Championships 18-hole record (78).
-UMAC Championships 36-hole record (164).
-UMAC Championships 54-hole record (250).
-She broke her own BLC school records in all three categories.
-Earned her third All-Conference honor, the most of any Viking competitor.
This is the third individual UMAC Champion in program history and first since 2008 (Abigail Lacy).
Northwestern won the team race by one stroke over Minnesota Morris with its 1073. Bethany Lutheran took fifth (1244).
"Hayley works really hard, she grinds at practice, she grinds at tournaments; for it to all come together at the conference tournament is really cool to see," said head coach Josh Pederson.
Thompson was already in the clubhouse and had to play the waiting game to see if her name would stand atop the leaderboard. "At the end of the day, there were a couple groups finishing behind her, so we had to wait for their scores to come in," said Pederson. "Hayley played well today and gave herself a chance. When we saw that one gal from Morris had a tough finish, that helped Hayley claim the medalist honor."
This will be Thompson's final season with the program. On the impact she has left, Pederson commented, "monumental. We are very proud of her and her career, as she leaves as the best player in program history."
This competition took place at Pebble Creek Golf Club.
