ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) office released the All-Conference awards for men's soccer Wednesday afternoon and eight Vikings earned accolades with
Guilherme Gancho being named Rookie of the Year to headline the awards.
Daniel Almeida earned First Team honors for the Vikings while Gancho,
Jamie van Wijland,
Mike van der Horst, and
Gijs van Eldik were named Second Team.
Diogo Cavalcanti and
Nick Lundberg were each named Honorable Mention while
Matteo Faraguna earned All-Sportsmanship Team to round out the list.
Almeida finished first on the team and second in the UMAC this season in goals as he found the back of the net 18 times including 12 in conference contests. Last year's Rookie of the Year, Almeida also added eight assists on the season for 44 points to rank second in the UMAC.
Similar to his attacking mate, Gancho scored 12 times this season with all of them coming in UMAC contests. This season's Rookie of the Year also eight six assists on the year to finish second on the team and fifth in the UMAC with 30 points.Â
On the defensive side of the midfield, van Wijland earned his first All-Conference honor after adding a pair of goals and three assists to his defensive efforts for seven points. The sophomore helped the Vikings allow just 29 goals in 22 games this year for an average of 1.32.
In the back line, both van Eldik and van der Horst were key contributors to the Bethany defense that allowed the second fewest goals in the UMAC this year. The Vikings posted 10 shutouts on the season and van Eldik, who changed positions from forward to defense early in the season, and van der Horst from his defensive wingback position were two of the primary reasons why. Van Eldik also added six goals on the season to go along with two assists for Bethany, while van der Horst added an assist.Â
Cavalcanti finished the season atop the Vikings and third in the UMAC in assists this season as he totaled 10 on the year. The freshman also added five goals on the year to finish third on the team with 20 points.Â
His third career All-Conference honor, Lundberg started 21 games in net this season, posting an 11-7-3 record. He made 57 saves on the year while allowing 29 goals for a save percentage of .663.Â
