MANKATO, Minn. - Two late goals by the Bethany men's soccer team Wednesday night in its home opener made the final minutes intense, but Carleton was able to come away with a 3-2 victory at Scheels Field.
Carleton got the scoring started in the 12th minute and then took a 2-0 advantage six minutes later. The visitors carried a 2-0 lead into the break as Bethany held a slight edge in shots at 8-7.
The Knights then went up 3-0 in the 60th minute and was looking to be on cruise control for the rest of the match, but the Vikings were not done. Goncalo Nolasco headed in a corner kick in the 79th minute to get the home team on the board. Juan Campos then took advantage of a penalty kick to make it a one-goal game with 3:43 left in regulation. Bethany was unable to get another scoring opportunity the rest of the way, though, and suffered the season-opening loss.
Carleton edged the Vikings 14-13 in shots and 11-7 on goal. Brady Price made eight saves for the home team.
Bethany continues non-conference action against the MIAC on Friday, hosting St. Olaf at 7 p.m.
