MORRIS, Minn. - The offensive floodgates opened Wednesday for the Bethany men's soccer team in a decisive 6-0 win at UM-Morris to open conference play. The Vikings capture their first win of the season, improving to 1-4-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the UMAC.
Â
The Vikings scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 11th minute. Jamie van Wijland sent the ball from the midfield stripe to Liam Gosch in the right corner, who then centered it to Ted Tendaie. Tendaie played it back to Guilherme Gancho for the tap in goal.
Â
Nearly four minutes later on a corner kick from Miguel Goncalves, Gil Frazao headed the first touch over to Goncarlo Nolasco, who headed it into the lower left corner.
Â
With just over six minutes left in the first half, Vincent Oliveira won a tough possession battle near the right corner and found Gancho in front of the net for his second goal of the game and the Vikings maintained a 3-0 lead at half.
Â
Bethany went up 4-0 in the 53rd minute as Mike van der Horst cut off a pass in Cougar territory and rifled a shot from outside the 18 into the lower left corner. The Vikings went the length of the pitch for their fifth goal as Goncalves passed it from deep in his own end to van Wijland at midfield, who found Santiago Rios for a through-ball to Tendaie who took it the rest of the way for his second goal of the season.
Â
And with less than five minutes remaining, Oliveira worked his way up the left side through three defenders and connected with Bryan Jaimes at the top of the 18 who went to the lower left corner for the score.
Â
Bethany outshot Morris 27-5 overall and 13-1 on goal as Brady Price stopped the one shot he faced.
Â
The Vikings return home Saturday, continuing UMAC play against Northwestern at 2 p.m.
