Volleyball wraps-up season

Match 2

Mankato, Minn. - The Bethany Volleyball team ended their season Saturday, after losing to both Minnesota Morris, and to Augsburg. The Vikings started the day playing against Minnesota Morris.

“We came out strong right away and won the first game 25-21, but then we lost momentum, and let them have the last three,” said Allie VanHee (Madelia, Minn./Madelia). The Vikings lost the last three games 17-25, 15-25 and 21-25. “Our serve receive was a little off, and so without the perfect pass, it was hard to get the perfect kill."

Minnesota-Morris had 52 total kills while Bethany had just 43, and also had 30 hitting errors. Shelby Wiederhoeft (Truman, Minn./Truman) led the team with 14 kills, and Kasslin Swenson (Nicollet, Minn./Nicollet) added 10. Krissy Schemmel (Mankato, Minn./Riverland CC) had 17 set assists, and Emily Franzen (Lewiston, Minn./Lewiston-Alutra) added 16.

“We killed ourselves on the little things, and that’s what cost us the game," Assistant Coach William Tatge said.

The Vikings had their next game against Augsburg, and they went all the way to five games. Augsburg won the first two games 25-18, and 25-22.

“We didn’t come out strong, and losing the first two games put down our confidence level a bit, but we picked it up and won the next two games,” said Amanda Edmison (Mayer, Minn./Watertown-Mayer). “That just showed how we never give up.”

The Vikings won the next two games 25-23, and 25-22. In the last game, Augsburg managed to slide past BLC in the final few points to come back and win 16-14 over the Vikings.

“It was a tough loss after coming back and winning games three and four, and it was a sad way to end the season without a win, but we played well.”

Caitlin Decker (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) led the team with 15 kills, and Edmison followed with 14. The Vikings also added six serving aces to the mix.

Vanessa Harkins (Le Center, Minn./Le Center) had 20 digs for the Vikings, and Jessi Jurries (Trimont, Minn./Martin County West) had 16, and Schemmel had 43 set assists.

“Despite losing the last two games of the season, we played well, and I was proud of the girls, we hustled more, and picked up more tips in this last game, and showed that we can fight back," Head Coach Sue Forrety said.
