St. Paul, Minn. - The Bethany Vikings did not do as well as they had hoped this weekend at the St. Kate’s tournament. The Vikings went 3-1 over the two days of volleyball.
Bethany came out strong on friday afternoon against Alverno, winning in three games. Bethany had 29 kills to Alverno’s 18 and Amanda Edmison (Mayer, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) led the team with nine kills. Taylor Kahlow (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur) added 19 digs for the Vikings.
Bethany played again Friday night against Macalester and lost in three close games 25-23, 25-22, and 25-23. The last time the Vikings met the Scots earlier this year BLC one in five sets. Bethany had 21 errors at the net, which caused some trouble offensively. Freshman Caitlin Decker (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) had six kills for the Vikings.
Saturday morning Bethany took on UW-Stout and lost in four games. The squad lost the first two, 25-17, and 25-15, and then managed to come back and win the third 25-17, but then lost the fourth in a close 25-21 game.
Edmison and Shelby Wiederhoeft (Truman, Minn./Truman) were once again strong at the net offensively and had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Kahlow added 26 digs, and Krissy Schemmel (Mankato, Minn./Riverland CC) 24 assists.
The Vikings had their last match Saturday afternoon against tournament hosts St. Kates. Bethany lost in three games of 25-19, 25-15, and 25-20. The Vikings were unable to keep up with the Wildcats offensively and only had 25 kills to St. Kate’s 41.
The Vikings will host the second annual Bethany Lutheran Invitational this weekend for the first home games of the season.
