Box Score Women's Soccer Falls in Opening Round
ASHLAND, Wis. – The Bethany women's soccer team entered the UMAC Postseason Tournament as the number five seed in the pool of teams. The Vikings traveled to Northland on Monday afternoon to take on the Lumberjills in the opening round of the tournament. The two teams met once in the regular season, which ended in a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
On Monday, the Vikings and Lumberjills played into overtime once again. Northland scored a goal midway through the first overtime session to defeat Bethany 3-2.
The Vikings struck first in the 31
st minute of play as
Bridget Hennen (Apple Valley, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) scored her seventh goal of the season. The goal was assisted by
Taylor Friehl (Albert Lea, Minn.) and
Ali Mix (Oklahoma City, Okla./Western Heights).The Lumberjills answered with a goal late in the first period of play to tie the game at one apiece into half. With 15 minutes left in regulation,
Taylor Friehl gave Bethany a 2-1 lead.
Ali Mix assisted on the goal along with
Jessica Berlinger (Mosca, Colo./Sangre De Cristo).
Northland did not give in as they continued to pressure the Vikings defense, hoping to send the game into overtime. A Northland goal with 40 seconds left in regulation sent the game into an overtime session, like the regular season match up. Midway through overtime, Yulissa Espino scored her second goal of the contest to help the Lumberjills earn the first round playoff victory over the Vikings.
On the afternoon, Bethany attempted 11 shots compared to Northland's 13.
Averi Cash (Ottumwa, Iowa) finished the game with 10 saves.
The season concludes after the loss to Northland in the conference tournament for the women's soccer team. The Vikings ended the season with a 9-9-3 overall record and 5-4-2 record in conference. Congratulations to
